專利摘要

A computer has volatile memory, such as DRAM and non-volatile memory, such as flash. Memory objects are allocated using a memory allocation instruction. The instruction assigns an attribute to the object indicating whether the object data is hot or cold. A hardware performance monitor samples accesses to the memories at either regular or random intervals. Each sample records the address and type of the access. The type may be read, write or instruction fetch. Only cache misses may be recorded. The samples are then used to update the attribute of he object. The attribute is used to determine whether the objects should be allocated to the volatile or the non-volatile memory. The default attribute of the allocation function may be updated to match the attributes of the objects that it has already allocated. An object which originally had a hot attribute that has been changed to a cold attribute may be given a hot/cold attribute.
